ME DANCING RECENTLYFULL CV HERE

Phaedra Brown is an independent dancer, choreographer, and producer based on Gadigal Land.

Her practice utilises movement, choreography and text, often drawing on mediums external to dance. Her interest lies in performers as people, and the body’s ability to tell stories about shared human experiences and relationships.

Phaedra has choreographed and performed in the works ‘FLOP’ (side.step program, Balmain Town Hall, 2025), ‘How to Watch People in Cafes’ (Sydney Fringe Dance Hub, 2024), ’Waiting Game’ (supported by March Dance and Melbourne Fringe Festivals, 2022) and ‘A Small Spectacle’, (live-streamed for Melbourne Fringe 2020 and March Dance 2021). She has also undertaken residencies supported by Critical Path, Dance Makers Collective, Lucy Guerin Inc., Readymade Works, AusDance NSW and March Dance Festival.

Recently Phaedra has taken part in the 2026 Experimental Choreographic Lab, supported by Performance Space and Critical Path, and in 2025 she produced and performed in Bianca Yeung’s ‘BiPolar Express’ for Sydney Fringe. Other performance highlights include Rhiannon Newton’s ‘Caresss’ and Ella Watson-Heath’s ‘catandmouse’ (Future Makers ‘Echoes’ season, 2024), Stephanie Lake’s ‘Colossus’ (2018, 2019), Thalia Livingstone’s ‘Dark Points’ (2019), and the National Gallery of Victoria’s reconstruction of ‘Demon Machine’ (2017).

She holds a BFA Dance (Hons.) from the VCA, and a Graduate Diploma in Cultural Leadership from UNSW.

Falling flopping loving flailing trying again trying really really hard relentless persistent commitment compounding hope dreaming the effort doing the effort flaws the floor figuring out.

FLOP is a project made to express the physical and psychological labour of trying really, really hard. A love letter to the flop era, it celebrates the joy, devastation and compassion that comes with human effort and failure.

︎ This project was part of the 2025 side.step residency program, and the 2026 Experimental Choreographic Lab, supported by Performance Space and Critical Path

It’s not coffee, it’s the ritual.

It’s not about coffee, it’s how we get to know the regulars.

Tension, common ground, questions of each other. Craving patterns and a place to go.

It’s the space between us as we wait in line.

‘Remnants Re-Made’ is a collaboration between myself and dancer, choreographer, writer and artist Sarah Saxon.
The project looks at the vast amount of text and media accumulated by humans and relationship it has to the body; how does the body respond to and participate in this process? Through the accumulation, distillation and decay of movement, text, physical materials, and spoken word, this work explores how our past and present experiences with media transfer into the body, and how the body can, in turn, generate media.

The work uses a basis of choregraphic tools drawn from the relationship between speaking, writing, and dancing and the communication between these modes, as well as Memory and notation of past movement material, and remnants of remembered writing and speech.
︎ This work has been supported through residency periods by Readymade Works, March Dance Festival, Ausdance NSW and Lucy Guerin Inc. ︎Exerpts of material have been performed at Dance Makers Collective’s ‘One Night for Dance’ (March 2023) and Lucy Guerin Inc & Temperance Hall’s ‘Out of Bounds’ (August 2023).

Resilience and gentle hope – that which is
cultivated everyday through small acts of
humanity.

Waiting Game speaks to the joy, humour and
tragedy within the minutiae of everyday life. It
is simultaneously relentless and expectant;
desolate yet dependent upon camaraderie and
togetherness. The work embraces the need for
connection in a world that seems so illogical.

It reflects experiences of anticipation,
repetition and monotony that might transform
ultimately into disillusionment. However, by
reimagining these feelings, now familiar from
long periods of isolation, Waiting Game aims to
shift into spaciousness, clarity, and
conversation. Join us as we dance away our
disillusionment, and the joy of movement becomes
a tool for resistance.

Waiting Game was created in
collaboration with original cast member Tamara Bouman, who is now acting as artistic consultant. The work’s most recent Melbourne season was performed by Sarah Saxon alongside Phaedra Brown.
The work features music & soundscape by composer Oscar Sweeney and lighting design by Lacklan Wolters

“Absolutely love the connection between the dancers and the enchanting soundscape.” – March Dance Festival

“Emerging dancer-choreographer Brown is no longer waiting in lockdown or elsewhere. She is here, and we can’t wait to be there with her, too.” – Kate Maguire-Rosier, Dance Informa
︎ This work was presented as part of March Dance Festival 2022, supported by March Dance Festival and the City of Sydney. ︎
It was also presented as part of Melbourne Fringe Festival supported by Maribyrnong City Council.

A Small Spectacle is a solo show, created and performed by Phaedra Brown in a small inner-city share house. An eclectic mix of dance, architecture, costume and sound, the work attempts to convey the idea that a spectacle is as much created in its re-telling and re-imagining than in the event itself. A Small Spectace re-purposes text and sculpture and appropriates video-call and social media formats. The costumes have been repurposed from what was already in the house, and the house itself has been repurposed as stage and set. This work also explores the self-spectacularisation that comes with shaping oneself within a frame. Particularly in reference to the hyper-curation of self, seen in social media, the screen becomes the tight frame through which some things are accentuated while others are hidden. The frame of the house also plays a role in curating the way the body is perceived; the architecture and its connotations as a domestic space can constrict movement but also offer up a space to be reclaimed. Finally, A Small Spectacle is an ode to the common experience of lockdown and mundane days in isolation. The willingness of humans to imagine, create and share, even while facing collective upheaval, has been, and continues to be, spectacular.
This show was presented as a live streamed, digital show at Melbourne Fringe Festival 2020 and March Dance Festival 2021.

The culmination of my honours research, a companion paper to the work ‘A Small Spectacle’.

The paper discusses the way the project as a whole was informed by the notion of being spectacular. I accumulate definitions of spectacle, informed by history and by the creation of A Small Spectacle. I also discuss the way spectacle is perceived and curated by the viewer, the performer, and in the broader digital world.
